Find the Hidden Water Leak Today

Signs You Have a Hidden Water Leak

A home's plumbing system can develop leaks over time. Sometimes the leaks are visibly apparent, while other leaks may be hidden in the building's structure. The unseen leaks are more hazardous, as they can continue to grow larger and do more damage over time.

That's why homeowners need to do periodic inspections or hire plumbing experts to check their water lines, so any leaks can be caught and repaired early.

If you notice cracks, bubbles, or peeling on your Guelph walls or flooring, investigate further to see if there might be trapped water in that area. Press on the dark or damp-smelling, swollen area to see if it jiggles or moves. If so, you may have a water leak beneath the surface of the walls, floors, or ceilings.

Inspect the Roof and Downspouts for Damage or Leaks

At least once a year, the roof and downspouts should be examined for any debris backup or damage that could be forcing rain water to accumulate and trickle into your Guelph home.

Check the indoor areas near the downspouts to see if there are any signs of an unseen water leak. Dark spots in the ceiling or that can be traced along the wall might indicate water backup.

Examine the Basement and Attic for Damp Areas

Check near hard-to-see areas for signs of a hidden leak. For example, look at the window frames and doors to see if water has been able to trickle in due to damaged frames or leaks.

Examine the insulated areas for signs of moisture or dampness, along with the attic beams and basement concrete or block foundation area. Damp spots are likely some type of water leakage.

Notice Any Musty or Moldy Odors Near Plumbing Fixtures

Inspect the visible pipeline in the basement as well as along the walls where pipes run under the surface. Look for moldy or mildew spots, darkening of the wall structure, or evidence of rotting wood.

Check Your Water Bill or Water Level

Compare water bills over several months' time to see if they are increasing. If so, chances are you may have water dripping somewhere that is running up the cost. Those using well water may notice a difference in water pressure if there is a significant leak somewhere.

If you suspect a leak, call a plumber for speedy verification and repair.
